Your solar inverter converts the DC electricity generated by your panels into AC electricity your home can use. It also manages energy flow between your panels, battery, home loads, and the grid. A well-matched inverter is critical to system performance, monitoring capability, and long-term reliability. SunPeople installs and services inverters from Fronius, Sungrow, and SigEnergy across the Illawarra, South Coast, and Southern Highlands.
Understanding inverters
What Does an Inverter Actually Do?
Every solar system needs an inverter. Solar panels produce direct current (DC) electricity, but your home runs on alternating current (AC). The inverter handles this conversion, and in modern systems, it does much more than that.

A good inverter manages how energy flows through your home. It decides when to use solar directly, when to charge a battery, when to export to the grid, and when to draw from the grid. It also provides monitoring data so you can see how your system is performing in real time.

The inverter is the component most likely to need attention over the life of your solar system. While panels last 25+ years, inverters typically have a 10–15 year lifespan. Choosing a reliable brand with strong warranty support and good monitoring tools is important.

Choosing the right type
String Inverter vs Hybrid Inverter
String Inverter
Manages solar panels only. Converts DC from the panels to AC for your home. If you don't have a battery and don't plan to add one, a string inverter is a simpler, often more affordable option.
Hybrid Inverter
Recommended
Manages both solar panels and a battery. Handles energy flow between panels, battery, home loads, and grid in one unit. The right choice if you already have a battery, or plan to add one.
If you're installing solar now and want to add a battery later, starting with a hybrid inverter avoids needing to swap the inverter when the battery arrives.
End of life
When to Replace Your Inverter
Your inverter may need replacing if it's displaying persistent error codes, producing less energy than expected, making unusual noises, or has reached the end of its warranty period. Older inverters, particularly those from brands no longer in the Australian market, may also lack compatible parts for repair.

SunPeople replaces inverters from all brands, not just the ones we originally installed. If your existing inverter has failed or is approaching end-of-life, we'll recommend a replacement that works with your current panel setup and any future battery plans.

Reducing costs
Inverter Rebates & Incentives
Inverter replacements on existing systems don't attract STC rebates on their own, but inverters included as part of a new solar installation are covered. If you're replacing an inverter and upgrading to a hybrid model to add a battery at the same time, the battery component may be eligible for the NSW Home Energy Saver loan.

Inverter Monitoring & Diagnostics
Modern inverters come with app-based monitoring that lets you track energy production, consumption, and system health from your phone. If your inverter isn't set up for monitoring, or if you have an older model without smart monitoring, SunPeople can configure or upgrade your monitoring capability.

If your inverter is showing error codes or underperforming, our team can diagnose the issue on-site and determine whether a repair, firmware update, or replacement is needed.
