A solar battery lets you store excess solar energy generated during the day, so you can use more of your own power at night instead of sending it back to the grid. This can help increase solar self-consumption, reduce grid reliance, and make better use of the solar system already on your home. Whether you are adding a battery to an existing solar system or planning a new installation, the right battery setup can make a big difference to how your energy is used over time.
Is a battery right for you?
When Does a Battery Make Sense?
A battery makes the most sense when your household uses a significant amount of electricity in the evenings, when your feed-in tariff is low relative to your import rate, or when you want the security of backup power during outages. If you're exporting a large portion of your solar generation back to the grid for a low return, a battery can help you use that energy yourself instead.

A battery is also worth considering if you have an EV, a heat pump, or other high-consumption appliances that you want to run on stored solar. As electricity prices rise and feed-in tariffs continue to fall, the economics of battery storage improve over time.

SunPeople will review your energy bills and solar export data during your consultation to determine whether a battery stacks up for your household, and which system offers the best return.

Already have solar?
Adding a Battery to an Existing System
If you already have a solar system, retrofitting a battery is absolutely possible. SunPeople does this regularly. Compatibility depends on your existing inverter: some inverters support AC-coupled batteries, while others may need to be replaced with a hybrid inverter to support DC coupling.

During your consultation, our team will assess your current system, review your energy data, and recommend the most compatible and cost-effective battery solution for your setup.
Things to know
What Should I Consider Before Adding a Battery?
Inverter Compatibility
Not all batteries work with all inverters. We assess your existing setup and recommend the most compatible option, or upgrade the inverter if needed.
Usable Capacity
Battery size is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). We'll model your usage to recommend a capacity that actually covers your evening consumption needs.
Backup Power
Not all batteries provide backup during a grid outage. If blackout protection matters to you, we can recommend systems that include this feature.
Feed-in Tariff vs. Self-Consumption
The lower your feed-in tariff, the stronger the case for a battery. We'll review your current energy rates to show you the expected payback period.
How it works
Our Installation Process
01
Free On-Site Consultation
Older switchboards may need an upgrade to safely support a solar system. We'll check this during the consultation and include it in the quote if needed.
02
System Design & Proposal
Based on the site visit, we design a system sized to your property and energy needs. You receive a clear proposal with system specifications, expected output, pricing, and any applicable rebates.
03
Installation
Our trusted and qualified electricians complete the installation, typically in one day for a standard residential system.
04
Commissioning & Handover
We commission the system, configure your monitoring app, and walk you through how everything works. You also receive all warranty documentation and after-sales support details.
05
Ongoing Support
If anything comes up after installation, our customer support team is here to help. We also offer system health checks and maintenance for long-term performance.
Reducing your upfront cost
Battery Rebates & Finance
Battery storage systems installed alongside a qualifying solar system may be eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), providing a meaningful upfront discount. SunPeople handles all paperwork, and the STC discount is included in your quote.

The NSW Home Energy Saver program also covers battery storage as an eligible upgrade, offering zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 for eligible households.
Earn from your battery
Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
If you install a battery, you may be eligible to participate in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program offered by some energy retailers. VPPs allow your battery to export stored energy to the grid during peak demand periods, and you receive credits or payments in return.

Tesla Powerwall owners, for example, can access the Tesla Energy Plan. Availability and terms vary by retailer and battery brand. SunPeople can walk you through the VPP options relevant to your chosen battery during your consultation.
