Hot water is one of the biggest energy costs in an Australian home, often accounting for 20–30% of your total energy bill. A heat pump hot water system uses a fraction of the electricity of a traditional electric system and eliminates gas entirely, making it one of the most effective upgrades for reducing household energy costs. When paired with solar panels, a heat pump can heat your water during the day using excess solar energy.
The technology
How Heat Pumps Work
A heat pump hot water system works like a reverse-cycle air conditioner. It extracts heat from the surrounding air and uses it to heat water. This process is 3–5 times more energy-efficient than a conventional electric element, meaning it uses significantly less electricity to produce the same amount of hot water.

Heat pumps work in all weather conditions, including cold mornings. While efficiency drops slightly in very cold temperatures, modern units are designed to operate effectively down to -5°C or lower, well within the range of Illawarra, South Coast, and Southern Highlands conditions.

Is it right for you?
When Does a Heat Pump Make Sense?
You're on gas hot water
Switching to a heat pump eliminates your gas hot water costs entirely. If gas is your only gas appliance, you can disconnect supply altogether and remove the daily connection charge.
You have an electric storage unit
A heat pump uses up to 70% less electricity to produce the same amount of hot water. The savings are immediate.
You already have solar panels
Timing your heat pump to run during solar generation hours means your hot water is essentially heated for free from your own rooftop energy.
Your current system is over 10 years old
Replacing it with a heat pump now means you benefit from better efficiency, government rebates, and lower running costs for the next 10–15 years.
The perfect pairing
Heat Pumps and Solar: A Natural Pairing
Heat pumps draw most of their energy during heating cycles, which can be timed to coincide with solar generation. Many heat pumps include a timer function that lets you schedule heating for the middle of the day, when your solar panels are producing the most energy.

This means your hot water is heated by excess solar, and the stored hot water is available for use in the evening and morning. If you're considering solar and need to replace your hot water system, doing both together is often the most cost-effective approach.

Service Area
Servicing the Illawarra, South Coast and Southern Highlands
With offices in Barrack Heights and Ulladulla, our team covers a wide area from Helensburgh in the north to Ulladulla in the south, and inland to Bowral, Mittagong and the Southern Highlands.
Before you switch
What to Consider Before Switching
Tank Size
Heat pump tanks are typically larger than gas units (250L–315L for a household of 2–5 people). You'll need adequate space for the unit, which is taller and wider than a standard gas system.
Noise Level
Heat pumps have a compressor that produces some noise during operation (similar to an air conditioner). Placement away from bedroom windows is recommended.
Highlands Climate
In the Southern Highlands, where overnight temperatures drop lower in winter, a unit rated for cold-climate operation is recommended. SunPeople will advise on the right model for your location.
Reducing the cost
Heat Pump Rebates and Incentives
Heat pump hot water systems are eligible for both STC rebates (providing a significant upfront discount) and the NSW Home Energy Saver zero-interest loan program. The combination of these two incentives can make the upfront cost of switching very affordable, in some cases reducing the out-of-pocket cost by more than half.
