For rural properties, hobby farms, remote workshops, and homes without reliable grid access, an off-grid solar system provides complete energy independence. Your property generates and stores all the electricity it needs, with no grid connection required. Off-grid systems require careful design to ensure reliable power year-round. SunPeople designs and installs off-grid systems sized to your specific property and energy requirements across the Illawarra, South Coast, and Southern Highlands.

The system explained

How Off-Grid Solar Works

An off-grid system combines solar panels, a battery bank, and an inverter/charger to power your property independently. During the day, panels generate electricity that powers your home and charges the batteries. At night and during cloudy periods, the batteries supply your energy needs.

The key difference from a grid-connected system: there's no grid to fall back on. Your battery bank must hold enough energy to cover overnight use and periods of low solar generation. The system is typically designed with a buffer for worst-case scenarios: consecutive cloudy days in winter when both solar generation is lowest and energy use (heating, lighting) is highest.

Is it right for you?

Is Off-Grid Right for My Property?

Off-grid solar makes the most sense when your property has no existing grid connection and the cost of connecting to the grid is high (often $20,000–$100,000+ for remote properties), when you have a rural property, hobby farm, or workshop that needs independent power, or when you specifically want to operate independently of the electricity grid.

Already Connected to the Grid?

If your property already has a grid connection, a hybrid system (grid-connected with battery backup) is usually more practical and cost-effective. You get the benefits of battery storage and backup power, while keeping the grid as a safety net for extended cloudy periods. SunPeople will advise on the best approach for your situation during a site visit.

Custom design

What's Included in an Off-Grid System?

Every off-grid system is custom-designed. There are no standard packages. We visit your site, assess your energy needs, and design a system that provides reliable year-round power. A typical off-grid installation includes:

A solar panel array sized to your daily energy consumption

A battery bank with capacity for overnight use and a low-solar buffer

A hybrid inverter/charger managing solar, battery, and backup generator interaction

Optional backup generator integration for extended cloudy periods

Remote monitoring for ongoing performance visibility

Off-Grid Rebates & Incentives

Off-grid solar systems are eligible for STC rebates in the same way as grid-connected systems. The NSW Home Energy Saver loan program may also cover off-grid installations for eligible households, particularly the solar, battery, and hot water components.

Getting it right

Off-Grid System Sizing

Getting the sizing right is critical. An undersized system leads to power shortages. An oversized system wastes money. SunPeople designs off-grid systems based on detailed energy auditing. We look at your actual appliance usage, daily patterns, seasonal variation, and future plans before specifying any components.

We also factor in the local climate. The Illawarra and South Coast have relatively mild winters with moderate solar generation, while the Southern Highlands experience colder conditions with potentially more cloud cover. These factors directly affect battery sizing and solar array requirements.
